Background:
SEE FULL COVER BELOW: The idea behind this design stems from the use of patterns in a visual to help convey a certain narrative. The original image shows tightly-packed apartments that all contribute to a darker and semi-run down pattern that was the perfect visual piece of a magazine cover for a mockup non-profit organization that shares information about global health.
Contrast:
To contrast against the overabundant dark background, white was used as the overwhelming contrast component to create visual separation from the copy and background.
Repetition:
One of the biggest contributors to repetition within the design is the serif-style copy to create a sophisticated look throughout the piece. Since the image is so visually dominant, the copy needed to stand out while not looking aggressive or overwhelming.
Alignment:
The title copy is all center-aligned to focus the viewer's attention on the title of the magazine. The subheader copy is all left-aligned to help the reader easily read the text.
Proximity:
The core sections in the piece are the upper-center aligned title copy and the subheader lower-left aligned copy. The subheader section consists of an article snippet and therefore grouped together to signify their relationship with each other.
